Biography

Toshio Hayakawa, better known as Ichirō Mizuki, was born on January 7, 1948, in Setagaya, Tokyo. He became one of Japan's most famous singers, especially known for anime and tokusatsu theme songs. Over his career of more than fifty years, he recorded over 1,200 songs for Japanese films, TV, video productions, and video games. He was affectionately called "Aniki" (big brother) by fans and fellow performers in the anime song community, and was revered as the "Emperor of Anime Songs."

Mizuki made his big break with the opening theme for "Mazinger Z" in 1972, which showcased his powerful vocal style. This style would come to define anime music for many years. His unique voice and energetic stage presence made him the top choice for heroic anime themes, including popular works for "Space Battleship Yamato," "Kamen Rider," and many other series that influenced Japanese pop culture in the 1970s and beyond.

Mizuki was also a savvy entrepreneur in the anime music world. In 1990, he produced the singing duo Apple Pie, fostering new talent in the field he helped create. In 2000, he founded JAM Project, a supergroup of top anime song performers, which brought fresh attention and respect to anime music.

As a voice actor, lyricist, and composer, Mizuki expanded his impact in the entertainment industry, all while staying true to his main role as a leading anime song performer. He also contributed by writing lyrics and composing music, playing a key role in the evolution of anime soundtracks. He kept performing and recording until his death in Tokyo on December 6, 2022, leaving a matchless legacy that shaped the sound of Japanese animation for fans worldwide over several generations.

Before Fame

Mizuki went to Setagaya Gakuen Junior & Senior High School in his hometown. He started his career in the late 1960s when Japanese TV was rapidly expanding and animated programs were becoming a big deal in entertainment. The rise of anime and tokusatsu shows opened up new opportunities for music performers with specific talents.

He entered the entertainment world just as Japan was experiencing a post-war cultural boom, with TV programs becoming more sophisticated and animated shows needing unique musical styles. This time marked anime's growth as a respected art form, leading to a need for performers who could capture the heroic and dramatic themes that became key to the genre's appeal.
