Biography

José Mariano Epifanio Paredes y Arrillaga was a key Mexican conservative general and politician, serving as President of Mexico from December 1845 to July 1846. Born on January 7, 1797, in Mexico City, Paredes became one of the most influential military figures during Mexico's early independence. Throughout his career, he frequently intervened in politics through military coups, successfully overthrowing the government three times during the Centralist Republic period.

Paredes first gained national prominence in 1842 when he led a movement against President Anastasio Bustamante amid a severe financial crisis. This coup resulted in the drafting of the Bases Orgánicas, a new constitution enacted on June 14, 1843. Two years later, in 1844, he orchestrated another coup against Antonio López de Santa Anna, accusing the president of unconstitutional actions. Congress backed this movement, boosting Paredes' political influence.

In 1845, Paredes launched his final and most significant coup against President José Joaquín de Herrera, opposing Herrera's plan to recognize Texas independence. This led to Paredes becoming president, where he faced the huge challenge of the Mexican-American War that began in April 1846. Early in his term, Paredes briefly considered establishing a monarchy in Mexico but dropped the idea to focus on the conflict with the United States.

His presidency was marked by several military defeats against American forces, which weakened his political standing and military reputation. Under mounting pressure and the threat of being overthrown, Paredes resigned on July 28, 1846, after eight months as president. He died on September 7, 1849, in his birthplace of Mexico City at the age of 52. Paredes was married to Josefa Cortés and left a political legacy through his grandson, Pedro Lascuráin Paredes, who later became Mexico's 38th president.

Before Fame

Paredes grew up during Mexico's fight for independence from Spain, which ended in 1821 when he was twenty-four. The early years of Mexican independence were marked by intense political instability, economic struggles, and constant government changes. This chaotic period led to chances for military leaders to gain political power through armed intervention, a pattern that shaped Mexican politics for much of the 19th century.

The young republic faced crucial questions about its government structure, swinging between federalist and centralist systems while dealing with regional uprisings, foreign threats, and serious financial troubles. Military officers like Paredes became key power players during this time, as civilian institutions were weak and the army often acted as the main source of political authority.
