Born Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan in Tonk, Rajasthan, he was widely seen as one of the best actors in global cinema during his career of over 30 years. In 2011, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, and was given the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 2021.
Khan's early career involved small roles and years of struggle before he got his big break. He debuted in a minor role in Salaam Bombay! His first major roles in Hindi films were in Drishti (1990) directed by Govind Nihalani and Ek Doctor Ki Maut (1990) alongside Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi. The British film The Warrior (2001) marked his international debut, leading to his breakthrough as a leading actor in Hindi cinema with Haasil (2003) and Maqbool (2004).
His role in Paan Singh Tomar (2011) won him the National Film Award for Best Actor and established him as a top performer in Indian cinema. Before Fame
Khan was born in Tonk, Rajasthan, and studied acting at the National School of Drama, which gave him a solid start in theatre. In his early years, he faced financial difficulties and took on small roles in independent films and student productions. He worked in television and theatre while looking for film opportunities, gradually honing his skills through various projects.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the Indian film industry began focusing more on realistic storytelling, alongside commercial films.
