Biography
James Wan was born on February 26, 1977, in Kuching, Malaysia, and later moved to Australia, where he became one of the top filmmakers of the 21st century. He studied at Lake Tuggeranong College and then at RMIT University, where he honed his filmmaking skills and met future collaborator Leigh Whannell. Wan's career took off with his feature directorial debut, Saw, in 2004, which he co-created with Whannell. The low-budget horror film was a huge hit, leading to a franchise that made over $1 billion worldwide, making Wan a big name in the horror genre.
After Saw's success, Wan continued to make his mark in horror by creating more popular series. He directed Insidious in 2010 and its sequel in 2013, setting up another successful horror series. That same year, he directed The Conjuring, which was both a critical and box office hit, launching The Conjuring Universe, the highest-grossing horror franchise, with earnings over $2 billion. He directed The Conjuring 2 in 2016 and continued to produce other films in the franchise through his production company, Atomic Monster, which he set up to create film and TV projects.
Wan's career took a new direction when he ventured into big-budget blockbusters.
