Biography
Mahathir bin Mohamad, born on July 10, 1925, in Alor Setar, Kedah, is a well-known Malaysian statesman, doctor, and author. He holds the record for being Malaysia's longest-serving Prime Minister, with terms from 1981 to 2003 and 2018 to 2020, totaling 24 years. His political journey started in the 1940s with protests against the Malayan Union's citizenship policies and continues into the 21st century with his involvement in the Gerakan Tanah Air coalition in 2022.
Mahathir studied medicine at the University of Malaya and the National University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine before entering politics. He joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and was elected to Parliament in 1964 as the MP for Kota Setar Selatan. His early political career faced challenges, including being expelled from UMNO in 1969 for criticizing Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman after losing his seat. During this time, he wrote 'The Malay Dilemma' in 1970, discussing Malay identity and economic growth.
After Tunku Abdul Rahman resigned, Mahathir rejoined UMNO and returned to Parliament for the Kubang Pasu constituency. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as Minister of Education (1974-1978), Minister of Trade and Industry (1978-1981), and Deputy Prime Minister from 1976, before becoming Prime Minister in 1981. His first tenure involved ambitious modernization projects that shifted Malaysia's economy from agriculture to manufacturing and services, earning him the nickname 'Father of Modernisation.'
Mahathir's leadership featured major infrastructure projects like the North-South Expressway, the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, and the Multimedia Super Corridor. He implemented privatization policies and boosted heavy industries, positioning Malaysia as one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant economies. His Vision 2020 plan aimed for Malaysia to become fully developed by 2020. After retiring in 2003, he stayed involved in public affairs and made a surprise political comeback in 2018 at 92, becoming the world's oldest elected leader. He is married to Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali and has written several books, including his memoirs 'A Doctor in the House.'
Before Fame
Mahathir was born into a middle-class family in Alor Setar and quickly showed strong academic abilities. His father was a school headmaster, which gave him access to education and taught him the importance of learning. He studied medicine at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore, now part of the University of Malaya, and graduated as a doctor in 1953.
After graduating, Mahathir set up a medical practice in Alor Setar, helping the local community while his interest in politics grew. Seeing the socioeconomic issues faced by Malays in post-colonial Malaya influenced his nationalist views. He got involved in UMNO politics during the 1950s, starting at the grassroots level, and was elected to Parliament in 1964, kicking off a political career that would span many generations of Malaysian leadership.
