Biography

Guy Theodore Sebastian, born on 26 October 1981, is an Australian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He gained widespread attention after winning the first season of Australian Idol in 2003. Born in Klang, Malaysia, and brought up in Adelaide, Australia, Sebastian became a key figure in Australian music during the reality TV boom of the early 2000s. Winning Australian Idol kickstarted a career that made him one of Australia’s most successful recording artists.

His debut single, "Angels Brought Me Here," was the best-selling song in Australia for the 2000-2009 decade, cementing his status in the Australian music scene. Over his career, he has released eleven top ten albums, of which three hit number one on the ARIA charts. Eight of these albums have reached platinum or multi-platinum status. His singles have also done well, with twenty-three reaching the top twenty, fourteen hitting the top ten, and six reaching number one. This achievement makes him the only Australian male artist with six number one singles in Australian chart history.

Apart from success in Australia, Sebastian gained international fame by working with well-known American artists like Brian McKnight, Robin Thicke, John Mayer, and Lupe Fiasco. His song with Lupe Fiasco, "Battle Scars," stayed on the US Billboard Hot 100 for twenty weeks, peaking at number 71. It went 3× platinum in Australia and 14× platinum overall. The song also reached number two in Norway and New Zealand, showing his global reach.

In 2015, Sebastian represented Australia in its debut Eurovision Song Contest, performing "Tonight Again" and finishing in fifth place. This was an important moment for Australian music internationally. Throughout his career, he has received thirty-four ARIA Award nominations, winning seven, including Best Pop Release and Best Live Act. He attended King's Baptist Grammar School, and his influence on Australian music and culture was officially recognized in 2019 when he was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

Before Fame

Growing up in Adelaide after being born in Malaysia, Sebastian honed his musical skills during his school years at King's Baptist Grammar School. The early 2000s were a time when reality TV shows were changing the music industry worldwide, with shows like Pop Idol in the UK and American Idol in the United States opening new doors to stardom.

When Australian Idol started in 2003, it was Australia's entry into this global trend of televised talent competitions. Sebastian's involvement in the first season came at a time when traditional ways of discovering artists were being joined by these mass-media platforms, allowing artists from various backgrounds to gain national attention through public voting and televised performances.
