Biography

Jay Chou Chieh-lun, born on January 18, 1979, in Taipei, Taiwan, went to Tamkang High School before starting his music career. In 2000, Chou signed with Alfa Music and released his debut album "Jay," which began his impact on the Mandopop music scene. His big break came with his second album "Fantasy" (2001), one of the top-selling albums in Taiwan in the 21st century, firmly establishing his place in Chinese-language pop music.

Chou's music was known for mixing traditional Chinese instruments with modern Western styles like R&B, hip-hop, and alternative rock. Albums like "Yeh Hui-Mei" (2003), "Common Jasmine Orange" (2004), and "November's Chopin" (2005) highlighted this blend. "Common Jasmine Orange" became the best-selling physical album in China in the 21st century, selling over 2.6 million copies. He melded classical elements and traditional Chinese music with pop, inspiring a new wave of artists.

In 2007, Chou founded his label, JVR Music, allowing him more freedom with his music. He continued to succeed with albums like "On the Run!" (2007), "Capricorn" (2008), and "Jay Chou's Bedtime Stories" (2016), featuring hits such as "Blue and White Porcelain," "Rice Field," and "Love Confession." In 2022, he became the first Mandopop artist to top the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart with "Greatest Works of Art," the year's best-selling album in pure sales.

Outside of music, Chou entered acting and directing. He debuted in "Initial D" (2005), and appeared in "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2006), "Kung Fu Dunk" (2008), and "The Treasure Hunter" (2009). Chou also starred in Hollywood films like "The Green Hornet" (2011) and "Now You See Me 2" (2016). Married to Hannah Quinlivan, he has won many awards, including 15 Golden Melody Awards, making him the most-awarded singer at the ceremony. His music videos are hugely popular online, with six surpassing 100 million views on YouTube.

Before Fame

Growing up in Taipei in the 1980s and 1990s, Jay Chou witnessed Taiwan undergoing big cultural and economic changes. His time at Tamkang High School gave him a background during Taiwan's shift to democracy and its rise as a cultural center in East Asia. The late 1990s Taiwanese music scene was filled with traditional Mandopop ballads and Western music imports, making it ripe for something new.

Chou's rise began when he was found as a songwriter and producer before stepping into the spotlight as a performer. His early work in the music industry helped him learn both the technical and business sides of music production. When he signed with Alfa Music in 2000, the Mandopop scene was ready for a fresh sound that could rival the growing popularity of K-pop and J-pop in the region.
