Biography
Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob, born on January 18, 1960, in Temerloh, Pahang, is a Malaysian politician and lawyer. He was Malaysia's ninth Prime Minister from August 2021 to November 2022, serving the shortest term in Malaysian history at 15 months, during a politically tumultuous time. After earning his degree from Universiti Malaya, Ismail Sabri started his career as a lawyer before moving into politics with the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia's key Malay political party.
His political journey began in 2004 when he was elected as Member of Parliament for Bera, a position he still holds. He served in various cabinet roles under the Barisan Nasional government led by Prime Ministers Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak from March 2008 until their defeat in 2018, gaining experience as a seasoned administrator. During the opposition years, he became the 15th Leader of the Opposition under the Pakatan Harapan government from March 2019 until its collapse in February 2020.
The Malaysian political crisis from 2020 to 2022 thrust Ismail Sabri into the spotlight as he significantly contributed to Malaysia's COVID-19 response as the Senior Minister for Security under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. He had a brief 40-day stint as Deputy Prime Minister before becoming Prime Minister, marking him as the shortest-serving deputy who ascended to the nation’s leadership. His appointment on August 21, 2021, followed Muhyiddin's resignation amid political upheaval and lost parliamentary support.
As Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri faced the rare challenge of governing without being the president of his party, UMNO. He was the first Malaysian Prime Minister born after the country's independence in 1957 and the first to serve without appointing a deputy. His government functioned as a caretaker during a time of significant political instability, managing both the ongoing pandemic response and the intricate landscape of Malaysian coalition politics. His term ended after the 2022 general election, and he returned to being an opposition parliamentarian.
Before Fame
Born in post-independence Malaysia in 1960, Ismail Sabri grew up during the country's years of nation-building and economic growth. His early life in Temerloh, Pahang, happened as Malaysia shifted from a mainly agricultural economy to one focusing more on industrialization and modernization under the New Economic Policy. This time influenced a generation of Malaysians who would later become important political figures during the country's democratic progress.
After finishing his legal studies at Universiti Malaya, one of Malaysia's top institutions, Ismail Sabri started his career in law before moving towards politics through UMNO's grassroots network. His entry into politics was typical for Malaysian political leaders of his era, blending professional accomplishments with party loyalty and representation of constituencies. The political scene of the early 2000s, shaped by Abdullah Badawi's reform efforts and Malaysia's ongoing economic growth, set the stage for his first parliamentary election in 2004.
