Biography
Makoto Hasebe is a Japanese professional football coach and former player born on 18 January 1984 in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture. Throughout his distinguished career, he established himself as one of Japan's most accomplished defenders and defensive midfielders, earning recognition both domestically and internationally. He currently serves as assistant coach of the Japan national team, continuing his involvement in football after retiring as a player.
Hasebe began his professional career with Urawa Red Diamonds in 2002 after graduating from Fujieda Higashi High School. His performances in the J-League caught the attention of European scouts, leading to his transfer to VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga in January 2008. During his debut season with Wolfsburg, he contributed to the club's historic Bundesliga title victory in 2008-09, marking his first major European success. After five years with Wolfsburg, he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2013, though his time there was brief due to the club's relegation.
In July 2014, Hasebe joined Eintracht Frankfurt, where he would spend the most successful period of his club career. Over ten seasons with Frankfurt, he made more than 300 appearances and became an integral part of the team's leadership structure. His tenure with the club was marked by significant achievements, including winning the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Europa League title. His consistency and leadership qualities made him a fan favorite and established him as one of the most successful Japanese players in European football.
On the international stage, Hasebe made his debut for the Japan national team in 2006 and went on to earn 114 caps while scoring twice. He served as captain from 2010 until his international retirement in 2018, leading Japan through three FIFA World Cups and multiple AFC Asian Cup tournaments. His leadership was particularly evident during Japan's victory in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, where he captained the team to their fourth continental title. He is married to Arisa Satō and has transitioned seamlessly into coaching roles following his playing retirement.
Before Fame
Growing up in Fujieda, Hasebe developed his football skills at the local Fujieda Higashi High School, which had a strong football program. His early development coincided with Japan's growing football culture following the establishment of the J-League in 1993 and the country's co-hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The late 1990s and early 2000s represented a golden period for Japanese football development, with increased investment in youth programs and growing international recognition. Hasebe emerged from this environment as part of a generation that would go on to achieve unprecedented success both domestically and in European leagues, benefiting from improved training methods and increased exposure to international football standards.
