Biography
Jayavarman II (c. 770–850 CE) founded the Khmer Empire and was its first king, ruling from around 802 to 850 CE. Born during a time of political chaos in Cambodia, he united the fragmented Khmer principalities into a centralized empire that ruled mainland Southeast Asia for over 600 years. His rise to power began the Angkorian period, laying the groundwork for one of Southeast Asia's most important civilizations.
As a young prince, Jayavarman II spent years in captivity or exile in Java, likely under the Shailendra dynasty of Srivijaya. This exposed him to advanced political and administrative systems, which he later used in his own kingdom. Around 800 CE, he became a Javanese vassal ruler in Cambodia, but he aimed for more than just serving foreign rulers. Through warfare and diplomatic alliances, he expanded his territory by taking control from local overlords who had dominated different parts of Cambodia during the previous period of political unrest.
Jayavarman II's biggest achievement was declaring independence from Javanese control and establishing the devaraja (god-king) cult around 802 CE. This idea of the king being a divine figure provided spiritual and political authority that became key to Khmer royal ideology for centuries. He founded several capital cities, like Mahendraparvata, Indrapura, Amarendrapura, and Hariharalaya, showing his leadership and strategic vision for controlling the territory.
The king married two queens, Jayendrabhā and Dharanindradevi, following the polygamous customs common among Southeast Asian royalty of the time. Despite his importance, no writings from Jayavarman II's own reign have survived, so much of what we know about him comes from later Khmer records that depicted him as a great warrior and powerful ruler. He died in Angkor, which became central to his empire and the location of the impressive temple complexes built by his successors. His death around 850 CE ended the founding phase of the Khmer Empire, but his achievements laid the groundwork for future kings to create their architectural and cultural legacies.
Before Fame
Before rising to power, Jayavarman II went through a chaotic time in Cambodian history marked by political instability and foreign control. As a child and young man, he was either held captive or exiled in Java, likely under the Shailendra dynasty, which ruled the Srivijaya empire. During his time in Java, he learned advanced government systems and administrative techniques, which he would later apply in his own kingdom.
In his youth, Cambodia was divided among various local leaders and small kingdoms that often fought each other, while much of the region was under the political and economic influence of Java-based powers. Around 800 CE, Jayavarman II was made a vassal ruler by his Javanese overlords, who likely thought they could manipulate him as a puppet king. However, his time in exile prepared him for the complex task of building a state, and he started the gradual process of bringing the divided Khmer territories under his control.
