Biography

Norodom Ranariddh was a Cambodian prince, politician, and law academic who played a key role in moving Cambodia from decades of civil war to a constitutional monarchy in the 1990s. Born on January 2, 1944, in Phnom Penh, he was the second son of King Norodom Sihanouk and half-brother of future King Norodom Sihamoni. His early life was affected by Cambodia's unstable political situation, which made him pursue his education abroad during the Khmer Rouge period and Vietnamese occupation.

Ranariddh studied in France at the University of Provence and Paul Cézanne University, where he became skilled in law. He began his career as a law researcher and lecturer in French universities, staying in exile while his homeland went through years of conflict. In 1983, he joined FUNCINPEC, the royalist political party started by his father, and moved up the ranks. By 1986, he was the chief of staff and leader of the Armée nationale sihanoukiste, the party's military wing.

After being appointed FUNCINPEC's Secretary-General in 1989 and president in 1992, Ranariddh led the party to victory in the 1993 UN-supervised general election. This win led to a power-sharing deal where FUNCINPEC formed a coalition government with the Cambodian People's Party (CPP). In this setup, Ranariddh was First Prime Minister while Hun Sen of the CPP was Second Prime Minister, marking the return to a constitutional monarchy after years of republic rule.

Serving as First Prime Minister from 1993 to 1997, Ranariddh focused on economic growth and international relations, setting up the Cambodian Development Council and encouraging foreign investment. However, from 1996, tensions grew between FUNCINPEC and the CPP, especially over power sharing and different strategies for dealing with remaining Khmer Rouge factions. These issues led to violent clashes between forces loyal to each party in July 1997, forcing Ranariddh into exile and removing him from the prime ministership. He returned to Cambodia later and served as President of the National Assembly from 1998 to 2006, continuing his political career despite having less influence. He died on November 28, 2021, in Vauvenargues, France.

Before Fame

Ranariddh rose to political prominence during one of Cambodia's most difficult times. As a royal family member, he went into exile when the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians. While his fellow citizens endured the horrors of Pol Pot's regime and the Vietnamese occupation that followed, Ranariddh was in France, focusing on academic studies and building knowledge that would later help him in his political career.

In the 1980s, he shifted from academics to becoming a political leader as international pressure grew for a resolution to Cambodia's long-standing conflict. The Paris Peace Agreements of 1991 allowed him to re-enter Cambodian politics, making him an important player in FUNCINPEC's preparations for the UN-supervised elections that would shape the country's future government.
