Biography
José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix was born on January 26, 1963, in Setúbal, Portugal. He attended the Technical University of Lisbon, studying sports science, which played a key role in his systematic approach to football management. After a modest playing career as a midfielder in the Portuguese lower leagues, he retired at 24 and moved into coaching, a decision that would change the face of European football management.
Mourinho's coaching career started in a unique way. He worked as an interpreter for English manager Bobby Robson at Sporting CP and Porto and later followed Robson to Barcelona, where he gradually took on more tactical duties. When Louis van Gaal took over at Barcelona, Mourinho stayed as assistant coach, learning from Van Gaal's detailed approach to football. These years in Spain gave him valuable experience in European football tactics.
His first managerial roles were at Benfica and União de Leiria in Portugal, but his time at FC Porto starting in 2002 put him in the spotlight. In two seasons, he led Porto to two Primeira Liga titles, the Taça de Portugal, the UEFA Cup in 2003, and the UEFA Champions League in 2004. This success led to a move to Chelsea in England, where he famously called himself 'the Special One' at his first press conference. At Chelsea, he won two straight Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups before leaving in September 2007 due to reported issues with owner Roman Abramovich.
Mourinho joined Inter Milan in 2008 and achieved a historic treble in the 2009–10 season by winning the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League, making Inter the first Italian club to achieve this. He was awarded the first FIFA World Coach of the Year that year. He then managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the La Liga title in 2011–12 with record-breaking points and other domestic records. Later, he had stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, and Fenerbahçe, with his time at Roma leading to a UEFA Europa Conference League win in 2022, making him the only manager to win all three of UEFA's current club competitions. He returned to Benfica as head coach in 2025. For his contributions to Portuguese football, he received the Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry, one of Portugal's highest honors.
Before Fame
José Mourinho grew up in Setúbal, a port city south of Lisbon, during Portugal's shift from dictatorship to democracy after the Carnation Revolution of 1974. His father, Félix Mourinho, was a professional goalkeeper for the Portuguese national team, giving José early exposure to professional football. Despite this background, his own playing skills were limited, leading him to compete only at the lower levels of Portuguese club football before retiring in his mid-twenties.
Instead of following the usual coaching path, Mourinho studied sports science at the Technical University of Lisbon, which helped him understand athletic performance better. His fluency in languages like English, Spanish, Italian, and French led to his role as Bobby Robson's interpreter, a far more significant entry into elite football than a traditional assistant coaching role might have been. Working with top managers at Sporting CP, Porto, and Barcelona gave him invaluable experience in managing elite players and dealing with the politics of major European clubs.
