Biography
Karel Slavíček was born on December 12, 1678, in Jimramov, a small town in what was then the Czech-speaking part of the Habsburg Empire. He was a Jesuit priest with many talents, including astronomy, mathematics, music, and languages. He became the first Czech sinologist and was one of the most accomplished scientists of his time. While in China, he was known by his Chinese name, 嚴嘉樂 (Yán Jiālè), which shows how deeply he became part of Chinese intellectual life during his years at the imperial court in Beijing. He passed away on September 24, 1735, in Beijing, after spending the last decades of his life on missionary and scientific pursuits there.
Before Fame
Slavíček studied theology, mathematics, and the natural sciences at Palacký University in Olomouc, following the strict Jesuit academic traditions. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, the Jesuit order combined their religious mission with scientific inquiry, and Slavíček was very much part of this approach. His skill in languages, music, and mathematics made him well-suited for challenging missions to East Asia, where the Jesuits had gained influence by offering scientific knowledge at foreign courts. He joined the Society of Jesus and, after finishing his studies, was sent to the China mission. He then undertook the long and challenging journey to Beijing, which would shape the rest of his life.
