Biography

Lars Ulrich was born on December 26, 1963, in Gentofte, Denmark, and grew up in a family with strong tennis roots. His father, Torben Ulrich, and his grandfather, Einer Ulrich, were both professional tennis players. This background initially influenced Lars, who showed promise in the sport during his childhood and teenage years. At 16, Lars moved to Los Angeles, California, planning to further his tennis career.

However, once in California, his interests shifted towards music, especially drumming and heavy metal. This newfound passion led him to place an ad in The Recycler, a local classified paper, looking for musicians to start a band. This ad connected him with James Hetfield, a guitarist and vocalist, and together they founded Metallica in 1981.

As Metallica's drummer and co-founder, Ulrich was central to the band's sound and direction. Alongside Hetfield, he played a key role in the songwriting for almost all of Metallica's songs, helping to create some of the most influential heavy metal albums. The band's success turned them into one of the world's best-selling music acts, with albums like 'Master of Puppets,' 'The Black Album,' and 'Ride the Lightning' becoming heavy metal classics.

While in California, Ulrich attended Corona del Mar High School and later married Jessica Miller. His contributions to music and the cultural exchange between Denmark and the United States were honored in 2017 when he received the Order of the Dannebrog, a prestigious Danish award. Throughout Metallica's long career, Ulrich and Hetfield have remained the only constant original members, adapting through various lineup changes and musical shifts while staying at the forefront of heavy metal.

Before Fame

Growing up in Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s, Lars Ulrich was part of a tennis-playing family where excelling in sports was expected. His father Torben was a professional tennis player and was also known for his unique lifestyle and philosophical approach to the game. This background gave Lars discipline and a competitive spirit, while also exposing him to new ways of thinking that later shaped his music career.

When he moved to Los Angeles in 1980, Ulrich found himself at the heart of the emerging heavy metal scene in California. In the early 1980s, traditional rock was transforming into more aggressive and technical styles, with bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest inspiring a new wave of American musicians. Ulrich's arrival coincided with the Los Angeles metal scene coming together, providing a great setting for an ambitious young musician to make connections and form lasting musical partnerships.
