Biography

Keanu Charles Reeves, born on September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon, is a Canadian actor and musician. Over his four-decade career, he has become one of Hollywood's most familiar and loved figures, known for his wide-ranging roles in different genres and his unique public image. The New York Times ranked him as the fourth-greatest actor of the 21st century in 2020, and Time magazine included him in its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.

Reeves started his acting career in the Canadian TV series Hangin' In (1984) before moving to film with his debut in Youngblood (1986). He gained major attention with the sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) and its sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), showcasing his charisma as a leading man. He showed his dramatic abilities in the independent film My Own Private Idaho (1991) before solidifying his role as an action star with Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994).

The career-defining role for Reeves was Neo in The Matrix (1999), which launched him to worldwide fame and reshaped action films with its groundbreaking visual effects and deep themes. He returned as Neo in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), becoming the highest-paid actor for a single production at that time. Other major films include Constantine (2005), where he played the supernatural detective John Constantine.

After some ups and downs at the box office, Reeves made a strong comeback with the John Wick series starting in 2014, where he played a retired assassin out for revenge. This series revived his action career and showed his ongoing dedication to intense roles. Besides acting, Reeves directed Man of Tai Chi (2013) and plays in the rock band Dogstar. His recent projects include voice roles in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), as well as appearing in the video game Cyberpunk 2077 (2020). He also returned to familiar roles in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) and The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

Before Fame

Born in Beirut to an English mother and an American father of mixed heritage, Reeves moved around a lot during his childhood before finally settling in Toronto with his mother and stepfather. His education was not typical; he attended several schools such as the American Community School at Beirut, De La Salle College, North Toronto Collegiate Institute, Etobicoke School of the Arts, and Avondale Secondary Alternative School. Reeves had difficulties in school due to dyslexia but found success in sports, especially hockey, before discovering his passion for acting.

Reeves left high school to focus on acting full-time, starting with local theater productions and small TV roles in Canada. He showed determination and persistence during his early career, juggling various jobs while auditioning and slowly building his resume through Canadian TV and stage work. His big break in Hollywood happened thanks to his natural charisma and unique presence, which caught the eye of American casting directors and led to his first major film roles.
