Andrej Babiš
Slovak-born Czech billionaire businessman who served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2021, leading the populist ANO movement while facing fraud allegations.
Biography
Andrej Babiš was born on September 2, 1954, in Bratislava, which was part of Czechoslovakia at the time. He attended the University of Economics in Bratislava, which prepared him for his later business and political endeavors. After the Velvet Revolution and the peaceful breakup of Czechoslovakia, Babiš moved to the Czech Republic in the early 1990s, where he went on to build a business empire and eventually entered politics.
Babiš became one of Central Europe's most successful entrepreneurs by founding Agrofert, a large holding company that grew into one of the Czech Republic's biggest conglomerates. His business skills helped him amass considerable wealth, with Forbes estimating his net worth at about $3.5 billion as of February 2024. Earlier, Bloomberg valued his fortune at around $4.04 billion in November 2020, making him one of the richest people in the Czech Republic.
In 2012, Babiš shifted from business to politics by starting the ANO 2011 political party, presenting himself as a populist leader who promised to bring business-like efficiency to the government. He first served as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister from 2014 to 2017, and then became Prime Minister after ANO won the election in 2017. His first term as Prime Minister lasted until 2021, during which he introduced various domestic policies such as raising the retirement age, cutting pensions, and increasing child tax credits and salaries for senior politicians.
Babiš was the first Czech Prime Minister born outside the current borders of the country, the first to have dual citizenship, and the first whose native language was not Czech. He was also the oldest and wealthiest person to hold the office. His administration dealt with significant issues, like managing the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused around 35,000 deaths in the Czech Republic, and addressing the diplomatic crisis after the 2014 Vrbětice explosions that led to the expulsion of over 80 Russian diplomats. According to the Wikipedia extract, Babiš returned as Prime Minister in December 2025, marking his political comeback after his first term ended in 2021.
Before Fame
Born during the communist era in Czechoslovakia, Babiš grew up in Bratislava and studied economics at the local university. The fall of communism in 1989 opened up new opportunities for entrepreneurs to take advantage of the shift to market economies in Central Europe.
The early 1990s was a time of major economic change in the former Czechoslovak republics, with privatization and new market opportunities appearing quickly. Babiš took advantage of these changes by moving to the Czech Republic and expanding his business through Agrofert. This company became one of the country's most influential holding companies in agriculture, food processing, and other industries.
