Biography

Carlos Alberto Valderrama Palacio was born on September 2, 1961, in Santa Marta, Colombia. Known as "El Pibe" (The Kid), he became famous worldwide for his unique blonde afro and outstanding skills as an attacking midfielder. His career lasted from the 1980s to the early 2000s, during which he became known as Colombia's best footballer and one of South America's top playmakers.

Valderrama played for Colombia's national team from 1985 to 1998, earning 111 caps and scoring 11 goals. He led Colombia as captain during its successful period in the 1990s, playing in three FIFA World Cups (1990, 1994, and 1998) and five Copa América tournaments. His precise passing, technical skills, and vision made him key to Colombia's attack. He became Colombia's second-most capped player, a record he held for many years.

In club football, Valderrama played for teams in South America and Europe before joining Major League Soccer in its first season in 1996. His presence in MLS helped boost the league's credibility and popularity in its early years. In 2005, he was named in the MLS All-Time Best XI, honoring his impact on the league. His technical ability and creativity made him one of the most successful players in MLS history.

Valderrama won several individual awards, including South American Footballer of the Year in 1987 and 1993, and Colombia's Deportista del Año (Sportsman of the Year) in 1989 and 1993. In 2004, Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players. World Soccer magazine also listed him among the top 100 players of the 20th century in 1999. After retiring, Valderrama became a sports commentator for Fútbol de Primera, maintaining his status as a football icon.
