Biography

Kosta Trifković was born on October 20, 1843, in Novi Sad, then part of the Habsburg Empire's Vojvodina region. He died in the same city on February 19, 1875, at just thirty-one years old. Despite his short life, he became one of the top Serbian comedic writers of the nineteenth century. His plays humorously and insightfully depicted urban Serbian life in Vojvodina. Trained as a lawyer, his profession gave him a good grasp of social hierarchies and the quirks of bourgeois life, themes he often explored in his work.

Before Fame

Trifković grew up in Novi Sad when there was a lot of cultural growth among Serbs in the Habsburg Empire. The city was a hub for Serbian intellectual and cultural life and sometimes called the Serbian Athens, making it an inspiring place for a young man interested in literature. Though he studied law, which was a common path for educated young men like him, he was more drawn to literature and theater. At that time, Serbian theater was still developing, and there was a growing need for comedic plays that reflected local ways and resonated with Serbian-speaking audiences. This provided a great opportunity for a writer like Trifković, who was talented in dialogue and social observation.
