Biography

Hun Manet was born on October 20, 1977, in Memot District, Cambodia, as the second child of Hun Sen, who would go on to become one of Southeast Asia's longest-serving leaders, and his wife Bun Rany. Growing up in Phnom Penh during a time of major political changes and national rebuilding after the Khmer Rouge era, Manet got his general education in the capital before starting a military career at seventeen. In 1995, he joined the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and was also accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York, where he made history by becoming the first Cambodian graduate in 1999. He furthered his studies at New York University, extending his education beyond military training.

When he returned to Cambodia, Hun Manet built a successful career in the Royal Cambodian Army, steadily climbing the ranks for over two decades. He held senior positions like deputy commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, establishing himself as a military leader and gaining significant influence. His career placed him at the crossroad of Cambodia's military and political power, particularly the Cambodian People's Party, led by his father.

The 2023 general election was a major turning point. After the CPP's win, Hun Sen announced he would step down as prime minister on July 26, 2023, naming his son as his successor. King Norodom Sihamoni officially nominated Hun Manet, and the National Assembly unanimously approved him. He and his cabinet were sworn in on August 22, 2023, formally becoming the Prime Minister of Cambodia. At the same time, he became Vice President of the Cambodian People's Party, solidifying his power in both the government and the party.

As prime minister, Hun Manet has overseen several large infrastructure projects, including the Funan Techo Canal, and the completion of Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport and Techo International Airport. His administration has faced challenges like U.S. tariffs on Cambodian goods, which impact the country's export-driven manufacturing sector. His government has also dealt with a border conflict with Thailand, requiring diplomatic efforts to manage regional relationships.

Before Fame

Hun Manet grew up in Phnom Penh during the 1980s and early 1990s, when Cambodia was slowly recovering from years of intense conflict and foreign occupation. The country was rebuilding its systems under the political setup his father Hun Sen played a part in, giving Manet an early look at how Cambodian governance worked. He chose to join the military and officially began his path when he entered the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces in 1995 at age seventeen.

Getting accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point that same year was a rare chance, showing his skill and the diplomatic ties Cambodia was forming with Western countries as it rejoined the global community after conflict. He graduated in 1999 as the first Cambodian to finish the West Point program, and later went on to study at New York University. Manet's mix of military and academic training set him apart from many other members of the Cambodian armed forces.
