Biography

Inayatullah Khan Barakzai (1888-1946) was King of Afghanistan for three days in January 1929, making his reign one of the shortest in Afghan history. Born in Kabul on October 20, 1888, he was the son of Emir Habibullah Khan and brother to King Amanullah Khan. As a member of the Barakzai dynasty, he was part of the ruling Pashtun family that had controlled Afghanistan since the early 19th century.

Inayatullah's unexpected ascension to the throne occurred during a period of intense political upheaval. On the night of January 14, 1929, his brother King Amanullah Khan, facing rebellion led by Habibullah Kalakani, hastily abdicated and transferred power to Inayatullah before attempting to flee Kabul. Amanullah's escape to Kandahar in his Rolls-Royce was pursued by Kalakani's forces on horseback, though the former king managed to evade capture.

Left to deal with the crisis, Inayatullah found himself in an impossible position. Kalakani, who had been leading a successful rebellion against the government, sent an ultimatum demanding that the new king either surrender or prepare for war. Inayatullah's response was immediate and decisive: he declared that he had never desired the throne and agreed to abdicate in favor of Kalakani. On January 17, 1929, after just three days as king, he formally proclaimed Kalakani as the new ruler of Afghanistan.

Following his abdication, Inayatullah was evacuated from Kabul by the British Royal Air Force and went into exile. He spent the remainder of his life in Iran, where he lived quietly away from Afghan politics. During the Afghan Civil War of 1928-1929, rumors circulated in August 1929 that currency bearing Inayatullah's name was being distributed among forces opposing Kalakani, leading to speculation that he might attempt to reclaim the throne. However, these rumors proved unfounded, and Inayatullah remained in exile until his death in Tehran on August 12, 1946.

Before Fame

Inayatullah Khan was born into the Barakzai royal family during a period when Afghanistan was navigating complex relationships with British India and Russia in the 'Great Game' era. As the son of Emir Habibullah Khan, who ruled Afghanistan from 1901 to 1919, Inayatullah grew up in the royal court during his father's efforts to modernize the country while maintaining neutrality during World War I.

The path to his brief kingship was shaped by the tumultuous reign of his brother Amanullah Khan, who had implemented rapid modernization and westernization policies that created significant opposition among conservative tribal and religious groups. These reforms, combined with military defeats and economic difficulties, led to widespread rebellion that ultimately forced Amanullah to seek refuge by transferring power to Inayatullah.
