Biography
Lê Tương Dực (1495–1516), originally named Lê Oanh, was the ninth emperor of the Later Lê dynasty of Đại Việt, ruling from 1509 until he died in 1516. Born into the royal family as a grandson of the famous Lê Thánh Tông, he was the second son of Prince Lê Tân and Trịnh Thị Tuyên, the daughter of general Trịnh Trọng Phong. His rise to power was marked by violent conflict rather than peaceful succession, making him one of the dynasty's more controversial rulers.
In 1509, Emperor Lê Uy Mục, son of Lê Hiến Tông, started a purge of imperial princes suspected of disloyalty. Lê Oanh was arrested but managed to escape to Thanh Hoá, the ancestral home of the Lê dynasty. There, he gathered a strong army with the help of loyal followers Nguyễn Văn Lang and Nguyễn Hoằng Dụ. The conflict intensified when Uy Mục executed Oanh's older brother Lê Sùng, prompting Oanh to advance on the imperial capital. His forces were stronger, defeating the emperor's military and ultimately killing Uy Mục, which cleared the way for Oanh to become emperor.
After declaring himself emperor and choosing the era name Hồng Thuận, Lê Tương Dực initially showed effective leadership. His early reign focused on government reorganization and promoting Neo-Confucianist education. He commissioned important scholarly works, including the historical chronicle Đại Việt thông giám thông khảo with Minister of War Vũ Quỳnh, and the administrative guide Trị bình bảo phạm, which aligned government practices with Neo-Confucian ideas. These efforts showed his dedication to intellectual progress and organized administration.
However, later in his reign, his behavior and priorities changed dramatically. According to the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư, the main source documenting his life, Lê Tương Dực became increasingly corrupt and extravagant. He spent vast resources building huge palaces in the capital city of Thăng Long, draining the state treasury. His rule, which began with promise and reform, ended up being known for extravagance and poor management. He died on May 8, 1516, at the age of twenty, leaving behind a mixed legacy of both success and decline during his short seven-year rule.
Before Fame
Lê Oanh grew up in the imperial court during a stable time under the Later Lê dynasty and received an education suitable for a royal prince. As the grandson of the successful Lê Thánh Tông, he was expected to show leadership potential, though as the second son of a prince, he wasn't likely to succeed directly. His upbringing was shaped by his mother's military background, as her father was General Trịnh Trọng Phong.
Things changed dramatically during the reign of his cousin Lê Uy Mục, who became paranoid about potential threats to his power. The emperor's persecution of imperial princes forced Lê Oanh into rebellion and onto the throne, turning him from a minor royal figure into a key political player out of necessity rather than ambition.
