Biography

Leik Munhtaw (c. 1432–1454) was the 14th king of the Hanthawaddy Pegu Kingdom in what is now Myanmar, reigning for about seven months between 1453 and 1454. He was born in Bago, the capital of Hanthawaddy, as the son of King Binnya Ran I and the grandson of the renowned King Razadarit. Although his reign was brief, it happened during a tumultuous time of family conflicts marked by violent successions among Razadarit's male descendants.

Leik Munhtaw gained power by killing his first cousin, King Binnya Kyan, who had taken the throne in 1451 by murdering another cousin, King Binnya Waru. Binnya Kyan had tightened his hold on power by systematically removing male descendants of Razadarit who could threaten his rule. Aware of the risk to his own life, Leik Munhtaw acted first and killed Binnya Kyan to avoid the same fate. This act of violence was typical of the succession struggles that plagued Hanthawaddy during that time.

As king, Leik Munhtaw continued attacking rival claimants to secure his position. Despite these moves, he couldn't stabilize his reign or maintain power. The cycle of violence that brought him to power eventually led to his downfall. In early 1454, palace ministers plotted against him and had him killed in Bago, ending his short rule.

With Leik Munhtaw's death, the direct male line from King Razadarit ended. Without a male heir, the palace ministers had to choose a successor beyond the usual male-centered lineage. They selected Leik Munhtaw's daughter, Shin Sawbu, who became the next ruler of Hanthawaddy. Shin Sawbu went on to be one of the most respected monarchs in Mon history, ruling with distinction and leaving a legacy much greater than that of her father.

Before Fame

Leik Munhtaw was born around 1432 in Bago, in the Hanthawaddy Pegu Kingdom, as the son of King Binnya Ran I and the grandson of the famous Razadarit. Growing up in the Mon royal court, he was surrounded by constant power struggles and family disputes. As a prince from Razadarit's lineage, he had both status and peril, caught in a family marked by both honor and dangerous rivalries.

The political scene in Hanthawaddy before Leik Munhtaw's rise was marked by a quick and violent turnover of rulers. Starting with Binnya Waru and continuing through Binnya Kyan, the throne changed hands through assassination, not through an orderly succession. This dangerous environment influenced Leik Munhtaw's journey to power, compelling him to be aggressive to avoid being ousted by a reigning cousin busy eliminating potential threats.

Key Achievements

  • Reigned as the 14th king of Hanthawaddy Pegu, maintaining the continuity of the kingdom during an acutely unstable succession crisis.
  • His reign, however unintentionally, set the conditions for the historic elevation of his daughter Shin Sawbu to the throne of Hanthawaddy.
