Biography

Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki, Finland. He went to Svenska normallyceum before studying computer science at the University of Helsinki. While at university, Torvalds got into operating systems and computer programming, which set the path for his future career.

In 1991, while still studying at the University of Helsinki, Torvalds created the Linux kernel to better understand his computer's architecture. He initially made it for his Intel 80386-based PC, but he released the source code for free, inviting others to help improve it. This decision changed everything, as programmers worldwide started working together to enhance the system. The Linux kernel became the base for many operating systems, eventually powering devices from smartphones to supercomputers.

Torvalds kept leading Linux development while finishing his studies and later moved to the United States. In 2005, unhappy with existing version control systems for managing Linux development, he created Git, a distributed version control system. Git changed software development by allowing more efficient collaboration among programmers and quickly became the main tool for version control in the software industry.

Throughout his career, Torvalds has won many prestigious awards for his contributions to technology and computing, such as the Millennium Technology Prize in 2012, the Computer Pioneer Award in 2014, and the Lovelace Medal in 2000. He has also received honorary doctorates from Stockholm University and the University of Helsinki, recognizing his impact on computer science education and research. Torvalds is married to Tove Torvalds and has developed other software projects like Subsurface, a diving log application.

Before Fame

Growing up in Finland during the 1980s, Torvalds got into computing thanks to his grandfather's Commodore VIC-20 computer. This early exposure to programming sparked his curiosity about how computers work at a basic level. He later got an Amstrad CPC and eventually a Sinclair QL, where he experimented with assembly language and operating system ideas.

The late 1980s and early 1990s were times of major change in personal computing. Proprietary operating systems were the norm, but the free software movement was gaining steam thanks to people like Richard Stallman and the GNU Project. Universities were becoming hubs for collaborative software development, and students like Torvalds had access to Unix systems that inspired new ways to think about operating system design.

Key Achievements

  • Created the Linux kernel in 1991, which became the foundation for numerous operating systems
  • Developed Git version control system, now used by millions of developers worldwide
  • Received the Millennium Technology Prize in 2012 for creating open source operating system technology
  • Led the collaborative development model that enabled Linux to become one of the most successful open source projects
  • Inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012 for contributions to global Internet development

Did You Know?

  • 01.Named Linux after himself, though he initially wanted to call it 'Freax' (a combination of 'free', 'freak', and 'x' for Unix)
  • 02.The original Linux kernel announcement was posted to the comp.os.minix newsgroup with the subject line 'What would you like to see most in minix?'
  • 03.Developed Git in just two weeks after becoming frustrated with the BitKeeper version control system
  • 04.Has a law named after him: 'Torvalds' Law' states that 'given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow'
  • 05.Created Subsurface diving software because he wanted better tools to log his scuba diving activities
