Biography

Cai-Göran Alexander Stubb, born on April 1, 1968, in Helsinki, is a Finnish politician who became the 13th President of Finland in March 2024. He is a member of the National Coalition Party and has held many important positions in Finnish and European politics. He was Prime Minister of Finland from 2014 to 2015 and held several senior minister roles, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance. Stubb is part of the Finland-Swedish minority and is the first Finland-Swede elected as president since Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, who served during World War II and Finland's early years of independence.

Stubb's political journey began with his focus on European Union affairs. After getting his doctorate at the London School of Economics, he worked as a researcher in EU politics before entering politics. He was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 and quickly became known as an influential figure in European affairs. He became Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2008, marking his entry into the Finnish government, where he held various roles over the years.

In 2014, Stubb took over from Jyrki Katainen as leader of the National Coalition Party and was appointed Prime Minister by President Sauli Niinistö. He served as Prime Minister until 2015 when his party lost the parliamentary election. After that, he was Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Juha Sipilä until 2016, when he lost the party leadership to Petteri Orpo. Following this, Stubb resigned from his ministerial role and left parliament in 2017.

After stepping away from Finnish politics for a while, Stubb took on international roles, serving as vice-president of the European Investment Bank and later as director and professor at the European University Institute's School of Transnational Governance until 2023. He returned to Finnish politics to run a successful presidential campaign in 2024, winning the second round of voting with 51.6% against former foreign minister Pekka Haavisto. His presidency marks his return to active Finnish politics after years of international work in European institutions.

Before Fame

Alexander Stubb's rise in politics was shaped by his strong academic background and focus on European integration. Born into a Finland-Swedish family in Helsinki, he studied at several European schools, including the College of Europe and the University of Paris, and completed his doctorate at the London School of Economics. His expertise in European Union politics made him an authority in this increasingly important area as Finland became more involved in European structures.

The early 2000s were an ideal time for Stubb's skills to shine, as Finland was becoming more active in the European Union after joining in 1995. His research and publications on EU issues gained him recognition in Finnish policy circles, leading to his successful election to the European Parliament in 2004. This marked his shift from academic observer to active participant in the political processes he had studied.
