Biography
Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen-Cabuli, known as Tarja Turunen, is a Finnish singer born on August 17, 1977, in Puhos, Finland. She became known around the world as the lead vocalist of the symphonic metal band Nightwish from 1996 to 2005. Her operatic singing style helped shape the symphonic metal genre and influenced many musicians globally.
Turunen studied lyrical singing at the Sibelius Academy in Finland and later at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Germany. Her classical training gave her a three-octave vocal range and the technical skills that became her hallmark. In 1996, she co-founded Nightwish with keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen and guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, blending heavy metal music with her dramatic, classical vocals.
The band's unique metal sound, with orchestral and operatic touches, won them critical praise and commercial success. During Turunen's time with Nightwish, the band released several successful albums and became leaders in symphonic metal. However, conflict within the band led to Turunen's exit in October 2005, right after their End of an Era concert. Her bandmates issued an open letter citing personal and professional differences.
After leaving Nightwish, Turunen launched a solo career that highlighted her skills in both classical and metal music. She released her first solo album, a Christmas-themed "Henkäys ikuisuudesta," in 2006, and "My Winter Storm" in 2007, which marked her solo symphonic metal debut. Her later works included "What Lies Beneath," "Colours in the Dark," and the classical album "Ave Maria – En Plein Air" in 2015, showing her ability to move between different musical styles. Turunen married Marcelo Cabuli and continues to tour internationally, remaining one of the most recognizable voices in classical and metal music.
Before Fame
Turunen grew up in the small Finnish town of Puhos, where she was surrounded by music from an early age and showed a remarkable talent for singing. This prompted her to pursue formal classical training. Her hard work in developing her voice led her to Finland's top music school, the Sibelius Academy, where she studied lyrical singing and refined her technical skills, setting her apart in the metal world.
In the mid-1990s, the Finnish metal scene was expanding, with bands experimenting by adding classical and folk elements to their music. When Turunen met Tuomas Holopainen in 1996, her classical background provided the missing piece for his idea of mixing metal with orchestral sounds. This resulted in the creation of Nightwish and marked the beginning of symphonic metal as a well-known subgenre.
