Biography
Lionel Andrés Messi, born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, is an Argentine professional footballer. He plays as a forward for Major League Soccer club Inter Miami and is the captain of the Argentina national team. Considered one of the greatest football players, Messi has earned numerous individual and team honors. His remarkable talent, vision, and goal-scoring skills have made him a standout in world football for over 20 years.
Messi started his professional career with FC Barcelona, debuting at 17 in October 2004. He became a key player for the team and helped Barcelona win its first treble in Spanish football history in the 2008-09 season. This success kicked off a stellar period during which he won the first of four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards. By the 2011-12 season, he set a European record for most goals in a season and became Barcelona's all-time top scorer.
While at Barcelona, Messi won a record 34 trophies, including ten La Liga and four UEFA Champions League titles. He became the club captain in 2018, leading the team in many triumphs. The 2014-15 season was especially significant as he became La Liga's all-time top scorer and led Barcelona to a second treble. However, financial issues at Barcelona led to his departure in August 2021, and he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi holds many individual records, including eight Ballon d'Or awards and six European Golden Shoes. He’s been named the world's best player by FIFA eight times. Among his biggest records are the most goals in a calendar year (91), most goals for a single club (672 for Barcelona), most goals in La Liga (474), and most assists in international football (61). With over 900 career goals and 400 assists, his 1,300 goal contributions speak volumes about his impact. In 2022, he fulfilled his ultimate dream by winning the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, adding to his accolades, which include the 2014 World Cup Golden Ball. He is married to Antonela Roccuzzo and was named the All Time Men's World Best Player by the IFFHS in 2025.
Before Fame
Messi was born and grew up in Rosario, Argentina, where he started playing football as a child. He faced challenges early on, especially a growth hormone deficiency that needed costly treatment. When he was just 13, FC Barcelona agreed to cover his medical expenses, prompting his family to move to Spain in 2000.
He moved up through Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, where his incredible talent showed. Despite being small, his technical skills, speed, and goal-scoring ability made him stand out. His dedication and natural talent drew attention from coaches and scouts, which led to his professional debut as a teenager and the start of one of the most celebrated careers in football.
