Biography

Louis II of Hungary was born on July 1, 1506, in Buda, the son of Vladislaus II of Hungary and Anne de Foix-Candale. As part of the Jagiellonian dynasty, he became king of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia after his father's death in 1516, ascending to these thrones at just ten years old. During his boyhood, the kingdoms were ruled by regents, with Hungarian nobles wielding considerable power in state matters.

His reign was plagued by internal political struggles and external threats from the growing Ottoman Empire. Hungary suffered from financial troubles, weak military defenses, and infighting among the nobles, all of which hampered effective governance. In 1522, Louis married Mary of Austria, strengthening ties with the Habsburgs to gain military support against the Ottomans.

The Ottoman threat increased when Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent launched a major attack on Hungary in 1526. Despite efforts to secure help from European allies, Louis received little aid. The Hungarian army, outnumbered and poorly led, faced the Ottomans at the Battle of Mohács on August 29, 1526. The battle ended in a devastating defeat for Hungary, with thousands of soldiers and nobles killed.

Louis II died during the battle at age twenty, but the exact details of his death are unclear. Some say he drowned trying to cross a marsh in heavy armor, while others believe he was killed in the fighting. His death ended Hungary's medieval independence and sparked a succession crisis that left the kingdom split between Ottoman and Habsburg control for centuries. The Battle of Mohács became a symbol of tragedy in Hungarian history, marking the fall of the medieval Hungarian state.

Before Fame

Louis was born into the Jagiellonian family during a time of major political turmoil in Central Europe. His father, Vladislaus II, had taken the Hungarian throne through marriage and political moves rather than by right of inheritance, setting an example of weak royal power. The young prince grew up in a court filled with powerful nobles who often put their own interests above those of the crown.

When Louis took the throne at age ten in 1516, Hungary was already under pressure from the expanding Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. The kingdom was short on money, its military was weak, and the nobility was split into rival groups. These challenges defined Louis's entire reign, as he tried to strengthen royal power while facing external threats that ultimately proved too much to handle.
