Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, during a time of economic hardship, which shaped his sense of practicality and elegance. Growing up in modest conditions during World War II, he initially studied medicine at the University of Milan before leaving to serve in the Italian Army. This early exposure to discipline and structure later influenced his fashion design style. Armani's big break came when he designed menswear for Nino Cerruti while also freelancing for different manufacturers.
