Biography
Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen was born on March 14, 1946, in Guatemala City to a well-known family in Guatemalan society. He studied at Rafael Landívar University, where he prepared for his future in business and politics. Before jumping into politics, Arzú was a successful businessman, gaining experience in the private sector that he later applied to governance and managing city affairs.
Arzú's political career kicked off when he was elected as Mayor of Guatemala City in 1982, though he couldn't take office due to a military coup. He served successfully as mayor from 1986 to 1990, pushing forward modernization plans that improved urban infrastructure and city services. This strong performance made him a promising candidate for higher office, leading to his successful presidential campaign in 1995.
As Guatemala's 44th president from 1996 to 2000, Arzú's biggest achievement was negotiating and signing the peace accords with the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG) in December 1996. This agreement officially ended Guatemala's brutal 36-year civil war, which had resulted in over 200,000 deaths and displaced millions. The peace process required careful negotiations between government forces, guerrilla groups, and international mediators, eventually leading to the demobilization of rebel forces and steps toward national reconciliation.
After his presidency, Arzú returned to city politics, becoming Mayor of Guatemala City again in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015. During these terms, he focused on developing the city, reducing crime, and improving infrastructure. He led various projects aimed at updating city services to keep up with rapid urban growth. Arzú served as mayor until his death on April 27, 2018, in Guatemala City, dedicating over thirty years to public service in different roles.
Before Fame
Arzú grew up in Guatemala during a time of major political upheaval, with military coups, authoritarian rule, and the onset of civil war. His family background allowed him opportunities in education and business that most Guatemalans didn't have at the time. In the 1960s and 1970s, the civil conflict in Guatemala got worse, making strong political leadership even more important for maintaining stability.
Studying at Rafael Landívar University, a well-regarded Jesuit school, introduced him to Catholic teachings focused on social justice and peaceful conflict resolution. These ideas later influenced how he governed, prioritizing negotiation over military solutions to end the civil war. His achievements in business gave him both management experience and the financial freedom to enter politics, at a time when Guatemala's democracy was often unstable and disrupted by the military.
