Biography

M. Night Shyamalan, born Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan on August 6, 1970, in Pondicherry, India, is an American filmmaker famous for his supernatural thrillers and twist endings. His family moved to the United States when he was just six weeks old, settling in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. Raised in a Hindu household by his father, a physician, and mother, an obstetrician, Shyamalan got his first Super 8 camera at age ten and started making amateur films as a child.

Shyamalan became internationally known with his 1999 film The Sixth Sense, which he wrote and directed. This supernatural thriller, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, made over $672 million worldwide and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Shyamalan. The film made him famous for suspenseful stories with unexpected twists.

After The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan continued with supernatural themes in films like Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), and The Village (2004). During this time, his work featured atmospheric tension, minimal dialogue, and themes of faith, destiny, and human nature. However, his later films, The Lady in the Water (2006), The Happening (2008), and The Last Airbender (2010), did not do well critically and were commercial disappointments.

Shyamalan's career saw a revival starting with The Visit (2015), a found-footage horror film he funded himself. This was followed by Split (2016), which turned out to be a sequel to Unbreakable, and Glass (2019), which completed his Unbreakable series. His recent films include Old (2021) and Knock at the Cabin (2023), showing his ongoing interest in suspenseful stories and moral questions.

Before Fame

Born in India to medical professionals, Shyamalan moved to suburban Philadelphia as a baby and grew up in a well-off family. He went to the private Waldron Mercy Academy and then Episcopal Academy before studying at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1992. During his childhood and college years, he made many home movies, honing his storytelling skills and visual style that would later become key in his professional work.

After graduation, Shyamalan had a tough time breaking into Hollywood, writing screenplays and directing small independent films, including Wide Awake (1998), which came before The Sixth Sense. He hit his big break when he wrote the script for The Sixth Sense, initially conceived as a spec script that went on to become one of the most successful original screenplays in film history.
