Biography
Bafétimbi Gomis was born on August 6, 1985, in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France. He became one of the top strikers in French football during his professional career from 2004 to 2024. He started in the youth system at Saint-Étienne and made his professional debut for them in 2004. Early on, he also went on loan to Troyes in Ligue 2 to get more experience. In 2009, Gomis made a big move to Lyon, who were Saint-Étienne's Derby du Rhône rivals, for a transfer fee of €13 million. This marked the start of the most successful part of his club career. During five seasons at Stade Gerland, Gomis became one of Ligue 1's most reliable goal scorers, playing 244 official matches and scoring 95 goals for Lyon. He helped Lyon win the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions in 2012. In 2014, looking for new opportunities, Gomis moved to the Premier League by joining Swansea City on a free transfer. After a loan in France with Marseille, he continued in Turkey with Galatasaray, where he shone by becoming the club's top scorer as they won the Süper Lig in 2018. Gomis announced his retirement from professional football in 2024, ending a career where he scored over 100 goals in Ligue 1 and earned respect as a striker in several European leagues.
