Biography
Vedad Ibišević (born 6 August 1984) is a Bosnian former professional footballer and current assistant coach. He played as a forward during his career. Born in Vlasenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ibišević became a leading Bosnian footballer of his generation, scoring 28 goals in 83 appearances for the national team between 2007 and 2018. His international career took off as Bosnia and Herzegovina emerged as an independent football nation after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Ibišević started his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain and later made his mark in German football, where he spent most of his club career. He had a loan stint at Dijon before moving to Germany for good, playing for several Bundesliga clubs including Alemannia Aachen, 1899 Hoffenheim, VfB Stuttgart, Hertha BSC, and Schalke 04. His steady goal-scoring made him an asset for different teams and playing styles in the German league. In 2008, his impact on Bosnian football was acknowledged when he received the Idol Nacije award for Bosnian Footballer of the Year. Ibišević's biggest achievement came during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, where he scored the key goal that secured Bosnia and Herzegovina's spot in their first major international tournament. He further made history by scoring the nation's first World Cup goal in the tournament in Brazil. He studied at Saint Louis University, Roosevelt High School, and Gimnazija Meša Selimović. After retiring from professional football, Ibišević moved into coaching, taking on roles as both a football coach and assistant coach, sharing his vast experience with future players.
Before Fame
Growing up in Vlasenica during the chaotic Bosnian War in the 1990s, Ibišević's early life was filled with challenges common to many young people in the area. His family decided to move, which gave him educational opportunities such as attending Roosevelt High School and then Saint Louis University in the United States. This international exposure during his early years helped him become adaptable and gain a multicultural perspective, qualities that greatly benefited his professional football career. His journey from war-torn Bosnia to European football academies is similar to the experiences of many Balkan athletes who found success abroad while staying connected to their homeland. His mix of Bosnian roots and American education laid a strong foundation for his later achievements in French and German football.
