Biography
Macky Sall was born on December 11, 1961, in Fatick, Senegal. He started his political career there as mayor. He studied at Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar and then at IFP School in France, training as an engineer. His early political journey was with the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), where he became close to President Abdoulaye Wade. Sall began as Mayor of Fatick from 2002 to 2008, showing his skills in local governance. This led to him becoming Prime Minister of Senegal from 2004 to 2007, and then President of the National Assembly in 2007. However, tensions rose with Wade, resulting in his removal from the Assembly presidency in November 2008. This conflict led Sall to leave the PDS and form the Alliance for the Republic (APR) in 2008, taking on the role of an opposition leader. His presidential goals came to life in the 2012 election, where he finished second in the first round but gained support from other opposition leaders to beat Wade in the March 25, 2012, runoff. As Senegal's fourth president, Sall pushed forward economic reforms and infrastructure projects during his 12-year presidency from 2012 to 2024. The country's GDP grew from $17 billion to $27 billion under his leadership. Key projects included a new airport, a planned city near Dakar, highway expansions, express rail lines, a new national stadium, and better transport links to Mali. His government worked on upgrading Senegal's infrastructure while keeping the political environment stable and democratic.
Before Fame
Growing up in Senegal after the country's independence, Macky Sall was raised during a time when the new nation was building its political and economic systems. He attended Université Cheikh Anta Diop and later studied at IFP School in France, taking advantage of the opportunities available to driven young Senegalese after independence in 1960. With a background in engineering, he gained technical know-how that later influenced his approach to infrastructure development as a political leader. Sall began his political career in local governance in his hometown of Fatick, where his administrative abilities caught the attention of national political figures. His involvement with the Senegalese Democratic Party helped him climb the political ladder, starting as a loyal follower of the Wade administration before he eventually became an independent political force.
