Biography
Patrice Latyr Evra was born on May 15, 1981, in Dakar, Senegal. His father was a diplomat. When he was just one year old, he moved to France, where he grew up. Evra started his professional football career in Italy with Marsala, then moved to Monza. His talent shone through when he went back to France to play for Nice. There, coaches shifted him from a forward to a left-back, a change that defined his career. This switch helped him develop both the attacking and defensive skills needed to become one of the best full-backs in the world.
In 2002, Evra joined AS Monaco and his career soared. He became a crucial part of a successful Monaco team that reached the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final against Porto. His performance during this time drew the attention of top European clubs and established him as one of France's top young defenders. Playing at this high level laid the groundwork for his later achievements at Manchester United.
Evra's move to Manchester United in January 2006 was the start of his most successful career phase. Under Sir Alex Ferguson's management, he became one of the best left-backs globally, known for his speed, technique, and leadership. In his eight years at Old Trafford, Evra won 14 trophies, including five Premier League titles, three League Cups, a Champions League, and a FIFA Club World Cup. His attacking forays and solid defense were key to United's success during one of their most successful periods. He was named to the PFA Team of the Year three times and was also included in both the FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year.
Internationally, Evra earned 81 caps for France and was the team captain from 2010 to 2016. He played in five major tournaments: the European Championships in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and the World Cups in 2010 and 2014. After leaving Manchester United in 2014, Evra joined Juventus, where he continued to win, capturing two Serie A titles and reaching another Champions League final. His career included a controversial stint at Marseille, which ended early due to a UEFA ban, and a brief period at West Ham United before retiring in 2019. After retiring, Evra pursued coaching qualifications and returned to Manchester United as a trainee coach in their academy.
Before Fame
Growing up as the son of a diplomat, Evra had an international childhood, starting with his birth in Senegal and moving to Europe when he was just one year old. He started playing football in France, initially as a forward in youth teams. This move from Senegal to Europe helped him become adaptable and open-minded, traits that later helped him succeed as a team leader. His journey to professional football wasn't straightforward, as he began his career in Italy's lower leagues with clubs like Marsala and Monza. It was only when he moved back to France and joined Nice that his real talent began to show. Coaches there shifted him from forward to left-back, seeing his speed and smart play as valuable assets.
