Biography
Marat Mubinovich Safin, born January 27, 1980, in Moscow, Russia, became a standout tennis player known for his incredible talent and unpredictable nature. He went professional in 1997, quickly showing he could compete at the top level, and won ATP Newcomer of the Year in 1998 and Most Improved Player in 2000.
His big break came at the 2000 US Open when he convincingly beat Pete Sampras in the final, signaling his arrival as a major player in men's tennis. By November of that year, he'd reached the world No. 1 ranking, becoming the youngest player to do so in the Open Era at that time. He enjoyed nine weeks in that top spot. Known for his powerful serve and forehand, he was tough to beat when fully focused. He also won the ATP Fans' Favourite award in 2001 and 2002, showing how much fans loved his passionate and theatrical play.
Despite struggles with injuries and inconsistency, Safin played some of his best tennis during the 2005 Australian Open, beating both Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt to win the title. This victory solidified his status as a top Grand Slam player. He also helped Russia win the Davis Cup in 2002 and 2006. Throughout his career, he won 15 ATP Tour singles titles.
Safin retired from tennis in November 2009 and was awarded the Order of Honour by the Russian government that year for his sports contributions. He then entered public life, elected to the State Duma in 2011 with the United Russia party. He served there for several years, shifting his influence to a political stage.
In 2016, Safin became the first Russian tennis player inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame for his significant impact on tennis. He is also the older brother of Dinara Safina, who, like him, reached the world No. 1 ranking in singles, making them the only brother-sister duo in tennis history to both achieve this. In 2025, Safin took on a new role as a coach, working with Russian top-10 player Andrey Rublev.
Before Fame
Marat Safin grew up in Moscow in a tennis-loving family. His mother, Rausa Islanova, managed the Spartak Tennis Club in Moscow, a famous tennis academy in Russia where his younger sister Dinara also trained. This background gave Safin early and strong exposure to the sport. As a teenager, he moved to Valencia, Spain, to train with coach Rafael Mensua, like many young European players seeking better development opportunities abroad.
Safin developed his skills during the mid-to-late 1990s when men's tennis was dominated by Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. The game during this time favored big servers and aggressive baseliners, which fit Safin's natural abilities. He joined the ATP Tour in 1997 and gradually improved his ranking through the 1998 and 1999 seasons, showing signs of his potential, which fully unfolded when he won his first Grand Slam title in 2000.
