Biography
Masoud Pezeshkian was born on September 29, 1954, in Mahabad, West Azerbaijan Province, into a family with Iranian Azerbaijani and Iranian Kurdish roots. He studied medicine at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, earning his degree there. During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), Pezeshkian worked as a military doctor, treating Iranian soldiers on the battlefield. His medical career included specializations in cardiac surgery, general surgery, and general practice, making him a respected figure in Iran's medical community.
Pezeshkian moved from medicine to politics in the late 1990s, joining Mohammad Khatami's reformist government as Deputy Health Minister in 1997. His political career progressed when he became Minister of Health and Medical Education from 2001 to 2005, during which he introduced various healthcare reforms. After serving as minister, Pezeshkian ran for parliament, representing the Tabriz, Osku, and Azarshahr district. He served five consecutive terms from 2008 to 2024, and held the role of First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament from 2016 to 2020.
Pezeshkian aimed for the presidency in multiple elections. He entered the 2013 presidential race but later withdrew. His second attempt in 2021 was unsuccessful when the Guardian Council barred him from running. Eventually, in 2024, after President Ebrahim Raisi's death, Pezeshkian won the presidential election as a moderate reformist candidate, defeating principlist nominee Saeed Jalili. At 69, he became the ninth and oldest president of Iran.
As president, Pezeshkian has dealt with complicated international issues while sticking to Iran's traditional foreign policy positions. His presidency has supported the 'Axis of Resistance' in regional disputes, especially during the Iran-Israel proxy conflict. He oversaw significant military actions, including the October 2024 Iranian strikes on Israel in response to Israeli assassinations of key leaders like Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Despite his reformist background, Pezeshkian has shown interest in reviving nuclear talks with the United States, aiming for sanctions relief in exchange for nuclear program concessions. His presidency has faced rising regional tensions and personal security challenges.
Before Fame
Growing up in Mahabad during the 1950s and 1960s, Pezeshkian lived in a culturally mixed border area of Iran, influencing his view of ethnic and linguistic minorities in the country. His early years took place during major political shifts in Iran, like the White Revolution under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and rising social tensions that would eventually lead to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Pezeshkian became well-known through Iran's medical education system, which expanded a lot after the revolution as the country aimed to develop its own healthcare expertise. During the Iran-Iraq War, he served as a military doctor, gaining firsthand experience of the conflict that shaped many Iranian leaders and establishing him as someone who served his country during a very tough time.
