Biography

Max Emilian Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997 in Hasselt, Belgium, and raised in Maaseik. He is the son of Dutch former Formula One driver Jos Verstappen and Belgian former kart racer Sophie Kumpen. Holding both Dutch and Belgian nationality, Verstappen competes under the Dutch flag in Formula One for Red Bull Racing. His upbringing was steeped in motorsport, and he began karting at a young age under the guidance of his father, rapidly distinguishing himself as an exceptional talent in the junior categories.

After a record-breaking karting career that culminated in a standout 2013 season, Verstappen bypassed many of the conventional junior formula steps and progressed directly to FIA European Formula 3. Racing for Van Amersfoort, he finished third in the championship in his rookie season while breaking several records. His performances attracted significant attention, and in 2015 he signed with Toro Rosso as part of the Red Bull Junior Team. At the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, aged 17, he became the youngest driver ever to compete in a Formula One race, a record that still stands.

Verstappen scored points on multiple occasions in his debut season and retained his seat for 2016, before being promoted midseason to the parent Red Bull Racing team to partner Daniel Ricciardo. On his very first race for Red Bull at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, he crossed the line in first place, becoming the youngest driver in history to win a Formula One Grand Prix at just 18 years of age. He accumulated multiple race victories in the 2017 and 2018 seasons and finished third in the World Drivers' Championship in both 2019 and 2020 as Red Bull transitioned to Honda power.

The 2021 season marked a turning point in Verstappen's career and in Formula One history. After a fiercely contested championship battle with Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen overtook his rival on the final lap of the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to claim his first World Drivers' Championship, becoming the first Dutch driver ever to hold the title. He was 24 years old at the time. He followed this with further titles in 2022 and 2023, the former involving the largest points deficit ever overturned in Formula One history, and both seasons saw him break numerous long-standing records for wins and points in a single campaign.

Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive World Drivers' Championship in 2024, winning nine Grands Prix over the course of the season, including a widely praised wet-weather performance at the São Paulo Grand Prix. By the end of the 2024 season, he had accumulated four consecutive titles and 71 Grand Prix victories across 12 seasons, placing him among the most successful drivers in the sport's history. He continues to compete for Red Bull Racing and remains one of the dominant forces in contemporary Formula One.

Before Fame

Max Verstappen grew up in Maaseik, Belgium, in a household defined by motorsport. His father, Jos Verstappen, competed in Formula One throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, was a competitive kart racer in her own right. Max began karting at the age of four and spent his formative years competing across Europe, developing a driving style noted for its aggression and precision under pressure. His father oversaw much of his early training, and the two were often seen together at circuits across the continent.

By 2013, Verstappen's karting career had reached a level that drew attention from major Formula One teams. His transition to single-seater racing in 2014 with Van Amersfoort Racing in the FIA European Formula 3 championship was unusually direct, skipping the Formula Renault and similar feeder series that most young drivers use as stepping stones. He won the Talent of the Year award in 2014 and finished third in the Formula 3 standings before Toro Rosso, the junior team of Red Bull Racing, signed him at the age of 16. His debut at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, just days after his 17th birthday, launched one of the most talked-about careers in modern motorsport.
