Biography

Edson André Sitoe, known professionally as Mexer, was born on 8 September 1988 in Maputo, Mozambique. A central defender by trade, he has built a career spanning multiple European leagues and has become one of the most capped players in Mozambican football history. His path from southern Africa to the top tiers of European competition represents an uncommon trajectory for a player from Mozambique, a nation with limited historical presence in continental club football.

Mexer was brought to Europe by Portuguese giants Sporting CP in 2010, marking the beginning of a long association with Portuguese football. Though he did not establish himself at Sporting, he went on to accumulate 110 appearances in the Primeira Liga across three clubs: Olhanense, Nacional, and Estoril. This period gave him consistent top-flight experience and established him as a reliable and technically capable centre-back suited to the demands of European competition.

His career took a significant turn when he moved to France and the Ligue 1, where he would spend several seasons with Rennes and Bordeaux, making a combined 164 appearances in the French top flight. The highlight of his time in France came in 2019, when he was part of the Rennes squad that won the Coupe de France, defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final. It was the club's first major trophy in decades and remains one of the most celebrated moments in Rennes' recent history. His performances at Rennes in particular helped raise his profile considerably.

Following his time in France, Mexer continued his career at various clubs, eventually moving to Turkey where he joined TFF 1. Lig side Ankara Keçiörengücü. Throughout his club career, he has maintained his commitment to international football, earning over 75 caps for the Mozambique national team since his debut in 2007. He represented his country at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010, 2023, and 2025, making him a central figure in Mozambican football across nearly two decades of international competition.

Before Fame

Mexer grew up in Maputo, the capital and largest city of Mozambique, during a period when the country was still rebuilding following years of civil conflict that had ended in 1992. Football was deeply embedded in Mozambican culture, and the country had produced players who found opportunities abroad, though pathways to European football remained narrow. His early development as a footballer took place in this environment, where local talent often required the attention of foreign scouts or clubs with scouting networks extending into southern Africa.

His move to Europe came in 2010 when Sporting CP, one of Portugal's most prominent clubs and a side with historical connections to Lusophone Africa, brought him to Lisbon. This was a common route for talented players from Portuguese-speaking African nations, given the linguistic and cultural ties between Portugal and countries such as Mozambique, Angola, and Cape Verde. Mexer's arrival in Europe at the age of 21 gave him the foundation to develop into a consistent professional at the highest levels of club football.
