Biography

Mika Toimi Waltari (1908-1979) was a Finnish writer with a career spanning five decades and covering many genres. Born in Helsinki on September 19, 1908, he became one of Finland's most internationally recognized authors, especially for his historical novels. His book, The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen, 1945), was a global hit and translated into many languages. Waltari was incredibly productive, writing not only novels but also poetry, short stories, crime fiction, plays, essays, travel accounts, film scripts, and even rhymed texts for comic strips.

He studied at Helsinki Normal Lyceum and then at the University of Helsinki, where he honed his writing skills. He began his writing career in the 1920s and quickly gained a reputation as a versatile author who could work in different types of writing. Alongside The Egyptian, he penned several other historical novels set in various times and civilizations, showing his skill in researching and vividly depicting historical settings.

The Egyptian's success catapulted Waltari to international fame when it was made into a major Hollywood film in 1954, reaching a wider audience. The novel's appeal was due to its rich historical detail mixed with timeless themes of power, love, and human nature. Waltari's historical fiction was deeply researched, allowing him to create genuine period settings and make ancient worlds relatable to modern readers.

Throughout his career, Waltari received many awards for his contributions to Finnish literature and culture. These included the Aleksis Kivi Award in 1947, the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1952, and the Jussi Award for Best Script that same year. He was later made Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland, advancing to Commander First Class in 1960, and was granted an honorary doctorate from the University of Turku. Waltari kept writing until he passed away in Helsinki on August 26, 1979, leaving behind a large body of work that sold millions of copies worldwide, making him one of Finland's most successful literary figures.

Before Fame

Waltari grew up in Helsinki when Finland was shaping its cultural identity after gaining independence from Russia in 1917. His early years matched Finland's push to develop its national literature and cultural organizations. While attending Helsinki Normal Lyceum and later the University of Helsinki, he was introduced to classical literature and languages, which influenced his historical writing.

During the interwar years in Finland, there was a growing interest in both national heritage and international cultural exchange. Waltari started his writing career in this setting, initially working as a journalist while honing his skills in various literary forms. His early works in poetry and short fiction during the 1920s and 1930s set the stage for the ambitious historical novels that would mark his later career.
