Biography
Muttiah Muralitharan, born on April 17, 1972, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to a Tamil family, discovered his cricket talents at St. Anthony's College in Kandy. He became one of cricket's all-time best wicket-takers, excelling as an off-spin bowler for Sri Lanka in all international formats. He married Madhimalar Ramamurthy and moved into business and cricket coaching after retiring from playing.
Muralitharan's Test debut was in 1992, and he quickly gained a reputation as an effective spin bowler who could make the ball turn sharply on almost any pitch. His main skill was the off-break, but he also developed the doosra, a ball that spins the opposite way to his regular off-spin, adding more challenges for batsmen. His bowling action, featuring a unique arm movement due to a congenital bend, faced scrutiny during his career. The International Cricket Council cleared his action after tests in 1996 and 1999, allowing him to play without interruption.
During his prime, Muralitharan was key to Sri Lankan cricket's success. He was part of the team that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka's only win to date, and the squad that shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy title with India. He held the top spot in the ICC's Test bowler rankings for a record 1,711 days across 214 Test matches, showing his outstanding consistency for over a decade.
His chase for the all-time Test wicket record created some of cricket's most memorable moments. He first broke the record with 520 wickets, surpassing Courtney Walsh in 2004, but a shoulder injury allowed Shane Warne to overtake him that same year. Muralitharan reclaimed the record on December 3, 2007, surpassing Warne permanently. He retired from Test cricket in July 2010, taking his 800th and final wicket with the last ball of his last match. In ODIs, he broke Wasim Akram's record of 502 wickets on February 5, 2009, in Colombo, ending his ODI career with 534 wickets.
After retiring, Muralitharan received many accolades for his impact on cricket. Wisden Cricketers' Almanack named him Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1999 and called him the greatest Test bowler in 2002. In 2017, he became the first Sri Lankan cricketer to enter the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He has also been active in cricket development and business ventures, co-founding a widely distributed noodles brand across South Asia.
Before Fame
Muttiah Muralitharan grew up in Kandy, a city in the central highlands of Sri Lanka known for its strong cricketing culture. He went to St. Anthony's College, Kandy, a school famous for producing athletes, where he developed the unique spin bowling action that became his trademark. As a Tamil, he was part of Sri Lanka's minority community, and his rise to fame carried significance beyond just sports.
He came of age during a time when Sri Lankan cricket was developing as an international presence after the country got Test status in 1982. By his Test debut in 1992, the national team was starting to produce top-tier talent. Muralitharan's early international career coincided with changes in the global game, like the expansion of the World Cup and the increasing commercial focus on cricket in Asia, all of which influenced the environment in which his career thrived.
