Biography

Shakib Al Hasan (Bengali: সাকিব আল হাসান; born 24 March 1987) is a Bangladeshi international cricketer, often seen as one of the best all-rounders in cricket history. Born in Magura District, he has topped the ICC all-rounder rankings several times throughout his career. Known for his aggressive left-handed batting in the middle order and precise slow left-arm orthodox bowling, Shakib is Bangladesh's most successful international player in all formats of the game.

He made his Test debut in 2007 against India and quickly became a key player for Bangladesh. His standout moment came in 2008 during a Test match against New Zealand in Chittagong, where he took 7 wickets for 36 runs, the best bowling figures by a Bangladeshi player at the time. Throughout his Test career, he has scored over 4,000 runs and taken more than 200 wickets. He showed his leadership skills by leading Bangladesh to their first-ever Test win over England in 2016.

In One Day International cricket, Shakib has been even more successful, scoring over 6,000 runs and taking more than 270 wickets. He is the fastest player to achieve the milestone of 5,000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. His performance in the 2012 Asia Cup was particularly impressive, where he scored 237 runs, including three fifties, and took six wickets, earning him the Player of the Tournament award as Bangladesh made it to their first-ever final. During the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Shakib set a record for the most runs in the group stages, previously held by Sachin Tendulkar, and ended as the tournament's third-highest run-scorer with 606 runs.

Besides international cricket, Shakib has played in various T20 tournaments worldwide, including for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. His achievements in cricket have been recognized with Bangladesh's National Sports Awards. As of 2025, he holds the record for the most wickets in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history. Shakib has also served as a member of Parliament for Magura-1, showing his influence extends beyond cricket into public service.

Before Fame

Growing up in Magura District, Shakib Al Hasan honed his cricket skills during a period when Bangladesh cricket was making its mark internationally. The country gained Test status in 2000, just seven years before Shakib's debut, putting him in the first group of players to fully take advantage of Bangladesh's international cricket setup.

The early 2000s were key for Bangladeshi cricket, as the nation aimed to build strong teams and nurture local talent. In this environment, Shakib emerged as a naturally gifted all-rounder, with aggressive batting and effective left-arm orthodox bowling. His rise to international cricket happened alongside Bangladesh's efforts to shed the label of underdogs and become competitive rivals against established cricketing nations.
