Biography

Narathu of Pinya (Burmese: မောပါ နရသူ; also known as Thihathura; c. 1333–1364?) was the king of Pinya from 1359 to 1364, ruling during one of the most chaotic times in Central Myanmar's history. Born in Pinle, he took control of a kingdom already weakened by internal splits and the increasing pressure from Shan chieftains moving south into the Irrawaddy Valley. His reign was full of frantic political maneuvers and ended in disaster, making him one of the more tragic figures among Pinya's rulers. He was married to Saw Omma of Pinya during his reign.

Before Fame

Narathu was born around 1333 in Pinle, a settlement in the Pinya kingdom in Central Myanmar. The Pinya kingdom had formed in the early 1300s after the Pagan Empire broke apart. At this time, there were many rival states like Pinya and Sagaing, while Shan confederacies were gaining power to the north and east. Growing up during this unstable era, Narathu would have seen Pinya losing territorial control and the increasing boldness of Mong Mao Shan raiders. When he became king in 1359, he led a kingdom already struggling to maintain authority beyond its capital region.

Key Achievements

  • Ruled as king of Pinya from 1359 to 1364, maintaining the kingdom's formal existence during an era of severe Shan military pressure
  • Negotiated an alliance with the powerful Mong Mao (Maw) Shan confederation, demonstrating a willingness to pursue unconventional diplomatic strategies
  • Reversed the previous policy of alignment with Sagaing, attempting to reorient Pinya's foreign policy toward accommodation with the dominant regional power of the time

  • 04.The Mong Mao sack of Pinya in May 1364 effectively ended the kingdom as a functioning political entity, and Narathu's capture symbolized the complete collapse of Pinya's sovereignty.
  • 05.Narathu's attempt to use Mong Mao as an ally against Sagaing backfired severely, as the Shan forces showed no loyalty to the junior partner arrangement and turned on Pinya itself.
