Biography

Nicolas Sarkozy was born on January 28, 1955, in Paris. His father, Pál István Ernő Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa, was a Hungarian aristocrat who moved to France after World War II, and his mother was French with Greek-Jewish roots. This diverse background later influenced his views on immigration and integration during his political career. Sarkozy studied law at the University of Paris and Sciences Po, and became a lawyer focusing on business law.

He began his political journey in the 1970s by joining the Gaullist party and quickly climbed the ranks in local and national politics. He was mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine from 1983 to 2002, where he built a reputation as a dynamic and ambitious leader. During his time as mayor, he managed notable hostage situations and initiated local reforms that caught national attention. Under Jacques Chirac, he held several ministerial roles, including Interior Minister, where he became known for his firm stance on law and order.

Sarkozy was President of France from 2007 to 2012, dealing with the global financial and European debt crises. He launched economic stimulus plans, reformed labor markets, and changed the pension system. In foreign policy, he was involved in military actions in Libya, strengthened the connection between France and Germany during the European crisis, and upheld France's global influence. His presidency was characterized by an energetic approach and a high media profile, which attracted both supporters and critics.

After his presidency, Sarkozy faced legal issues related to campaign financing and corruption. He tried to return to politics in 2016 but didn't secure the Republican party's nomination for the 2017 presidential election. His time after leaving office has been focused on legal battles, including convictions for corruption and illegal campaign financing, making him the first former French president to get a prison sentence.

Before Fame

Growing up in a middle-class family in the wealthy Parisian suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, Sarkozy went through his parents' divorce at age eight when his father left the family. This early experience deeply influenced his personality and ambition. His mother, Andrée Mallah, worked as a lawyer to support the family, introducing young Nicolas to the legal field.

Sarkozy's political interest sparked during his university years at Paris Nanterre, where he joined the Gaullist youth movement. Unlike many of his peers involved in the May 1968 student protests, Sarkozy sided with conservative politics. He quickly showed his organizational skills and talent for speaking, becoming a local party leader while still in his twenties and building the connections that would lead to his rapid rise in French politics.
