Biography
Yasuhito Endo, born on January 28, 1980, in Sakurajima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, attended Kagoshima Jitsugyo High School before starting a professional football career that spanned over two decades. He is considered one of the top players in Japanese football history. Known as a skilled central midfielder with excellent vision, passing, and set-piece delivery, Endo made a name for himself in the J.League as one of the smartest players to have competed there.
Endo spent most of his career with Gamba Osaka, staying with the club for about 20 years and serving as captain during a successful period. Under his leadership, Gamba Osaka won several domestic titles, including J.League championships and domestic cup competitions. His calmness under pressure and game-reading ability made him a key figure for both his club and the national team throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
Internationally, Endo earned 152 caps for the Japan national team, making him the most capped male player in the country's history. He debuted internationally in 2002 and played for Japan in three FIFA World Cup tournaments and three FIFA Confederations Cup competitions. He scored 15 international goals, contributing as both a playmaker and occasional scorer from midfield.
Besides his international success, Endo set a record for the most appearances in J.League history, with 672 appearances throughout his club career. He's among a few players worldwide with over 1,100 official appearances in professional football. Towards the end of his playing career, he briefly left Gamba Osaka before returning. After retiring, he moved into coaching and is now the assistant manager of J1 League club Gamba Osaka.
Endo's brother, Akihiro Endo, was also a professional footballer in Japan; however, they are not related to Wataru Endo, another Japanese international midfielder playing in Europe. Yasuhito Endo's career is marked by consistency, leadership, and intense competition lasting over twenty years, making it one of the most significant in Japanese domestic football history.
Before Fame
Yasuhito Endo grew up on Sakurajima, a volcanic island in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. He honed his football skills in a place not usually known for elite players and attended Kagoshima Jitsugyo High School, which has a strong history of producing athletes in various sports. His early years in football happened during a key time for Japanese football, as the J.League had started in 1993 and was quickly raising the standards and popularity of the professional game nationwide.
By the time Endo finished high school in the late 1990s, Japanese football was becoming more professional, with clubs putting money into youth academies and the national team getting ready to co-host the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Endo's strong technical skills and tactical sense earned him a professional contract, and he gradually moved up before making his mark at Gamba Osaka, where he would spend almost his entire career.
