Biography
Nodirbek Fazliddin oʻgʻli Abdusattorov was born on 18 September 2004 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A chess prodigy from an early age, he earned the grandmaster title at just 13 years, 1 month, and 11 days, with FIDE formally awarding him the distinction in April 2018. This achievement signaled the arrival of a player who would go on to challenge and defeat some of the strongest chess players in the world before reaching adulthood.
Abdusattorov rose to global prominence when he won the World Rapid Chess Championship in December 2021 in Warsaw, Poland. At 17 years and 3 months of age, he became the youngest ever World Rapid Champion and the youngest ever open world chess champion across any time format. To claim the title, he defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi, the reigning classical world championship challenger, in a tiebreaker match. In doing so, he broke a record previously held by Magnus Carlsen, who had been 18 years old when he won the World Blitz Chess Championship in 2009.
Among his other notable accomplishments, Abdusattorov became the youngest player ever to defeat reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a classical game, achieving that feat at age 17. He also holds the record for the youngest player to attain a FIDE rating above 2400. These milestones collectively mark him as one of the most gifted chess players of his generation and a central figure in the resurgence of Uzbek chess on the world stage.
At the 44th Chess Olympiad in 2022, held in Chennai, India, Abdusattorov played first board for Uzbekistan. His team claimed the gold medal, and he personally earned an individual silver medal for his performance on board 1. The result underscored both his individual excellence and the collective strength of Uzbekistan as a chess nation. By April 2024, Abdusattorov had climbed to fourth in the world in the FIDE classical ratings, confirming his status as one of the elite players in contemporary chess.
Before Fame
Abdusattorov grew up in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, a city with a long tradition of producing strong chess players. He took up chess at a very young age and quickly displayed exceptional talent, progressing through the title norms at a pace that drew international attention. His rapid ascent through the grandmaster qualification process, completed before his fourteenth birthday, pointed to an unusually deep understanding of the game for someone so young.
His development took place during an era when Uzbekistan was establishing itself as a major force in world chess, supported by a strong national federation and a culture that valued chess as both an intellectual pursuit and a competitive sport. Abdusattorov trained and competed in this environment, benefiting from access to experienced coaches and high-level competition from an early age, which accelerated his growth into a world-class competitor.
