Biography
Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, born on September 18, 1976, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is often regarded as one of the greatest football strikers ever. Known simply as Ronaldo and nicknamed O Fenômeno (The Phenomenon) and R9, he changed the striker role with his unique mix of speed, skill, and ability to finish. He started his career at the Brazilian club Cruzeiro, then moved to European football with PSV Eindhoven in 1994. At Barcelona in 1996, he became the youngest FIFA World Player of the Year at age 20, setting new standards for attacking play. Inter Milan broke the world transfer record to sign him in 1997, where he won the Ballon d'Or at 21, becoming the youngest ever to receive the award. By 23, Ronaldo had scored over 200 goals for club and country, becoming a global superstar. Unfortunately, his career was hit hard by severe knee injuries that sidelined him for nearly three years. He showed great determination by returning to help Brazil win the 2002 FIFA World Cup, teaming up with Ronaldinho and Rivaldo in a famous attacking trio. After successful periods with Real Madrid, AC Milan, and a return to Brazil with Corinthians, Ronaldo retired in 2011. After retiring, he moved into football management and ownership, becoming president of the Spanish club Real Valladolid. His international career saw him make 98 appearances for Brazil, score 62 goals, and take part in four World Cups, winning in 1994 and 2002.
