Biography

Novak Djokovic, born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, Serbia, is a Serbian professional tennis player often seen as one of the greatest in the sport's history. He has been ranked world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for a record 428 weeks, setting a benchmark in professional tennis. He finished as the year-end No. 1 eight times and held the top ranking at least once in a year for 13 different years. Djokovic is married to Jelena Djokovic, and they have two children.

Djokovic went professional in 2003 and made his mark globally in 2008 at age 20 by winning his first major title at the Australian Open, breaking the 11-major winning streak of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. By 2010, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, known as the Big Three, became the most dominant players. He first claimed the world No. 1 ranking in 2011, a year he won three major titles and had a 10–1 record against Federer and Nadal, making it one of the best seasons in men's tennis history.

His most dominant season was in 2015, when he reached a record 15 consecutive finals and won 10 major titles, beating top-10 players 31 times. His success continued into 2016 when he completed the Career Grand Slam at the French Open and simultaneously held all four major titles, a feat last achieved by Rod Laver in 1969. Djokovic has won a record 24 major singles titles, including 10 Australian Open championships, 40 ATP Masters titles, and seven year-end championships, and he won the Olympic gold medal in men's singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Djokovic is the only man to hold all four major titles simultaneously on three surfaces and the only man to achieve a triple Career Grand Slam in singles. He was the first to complete a Career Golden Masters, winning each of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events at least once, and he's done this twice. With 101 ATP Tour-level singles titles, he's one of the most successful players in the Open Era. He has received several honors, including the Order of St. Sava (2011), the Order of the Star of Karađorđe (2012), the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year (2012), and the Order of the Republika Srpska (2013).

Before Fame

Novak Djokovic was born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, which was then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He started playing tennis at four years old, and his obvious talent led his family to make significant sacrifices for his training. When he was six, coach Jelena Genčić noticed his remarkable skills and worked with him for several years. At twelve, he moved from Serbia to train at the Nikola Pilić Academy in Munich, Germany, embarking on intensive international training to prepare for a professional career.

Djokovic's childhood was during a challenging time in the former Yugoslavia, including the NATO bombing of Belgrade in 1999, when he was eleven. He has shared stories of practicing tennis in a drained swimming pool during those bombing campaigns, experiences that shaped his character and competitive spirit. He turned professional in 2003 at sixteen and gradually rose in the ATP rankings, breaking into the top 20 by 2006. He reached a major final at Wimbledon in 2007, losing to Roger Federer, and won his first Grand Slam title at the 2008 Australian Open.
