Biography

Nwankwo Kanu was born on 1 August 1976 in Owerri, Nigeria. Known for his exceptional skill and vision, he moved from local Nigerian football to become one of the most successful African players in football history. Standing tall at 6 feet 5 inches, Kanu broke the mold for players of his height with impressive close control, smooth touches, and a natural talent for scoring goals, earning him a strong fan base at every club he played for. He is married to Amara Kanu Nwankwo, and together they've been involved in charitable work, especially through the Kanu Heart Foundation, which provides critical heart surgeries for children in Nigeria and Africa.

Kanu started his professional career at Iwuanyanwu Nationale in Nigeria before transferring to Ajax in the Netherlands. There, he quickly became one of Europe's most promising young players, winning three Eredivisie titles and the UEFA Champions League in 1995. He was part of a notable generation of players like Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert. In 1996, he played a key role in the Nigerian national team's gold medal win at the Atlanta Olympics, a significant achievement for African football. However, later that year he was diagnosed with a serious heart defect requiring open-heart surgery, which many feared would end his career.

After a brief time at Inter Milan, where he worked hard to regain his health, Kanu joined Arsenal in 1999 under manager Arsène Wenger. At Arsenal, he thrived, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cup medals. Arsenal named him one of the club's greatest players, and he was part of the 2003–04 'Invincibles' squad that completed an unbeaten Premier League season. One of his standout performances was a hat-trick against Chelsea in 1999, where he scored three goals in the last fifteen minutes to overturn a two-goal deficit, a remarkable individual effort in Premier League history.

After his Arsenal days, Kanu transferred to West Bromwich Albion and then to Portsmouth, where he led the team to an FA Cup victory in 2008, making him one of the older players to win the trophy in recent times. His role in Portsmouth's cup success earned him respect and showed his ability to play at a high level into his thirties. Over his career, Kanu also won the Intercontinental Cup with Ajax and received two African Player of the Year awards, in 1996 and 1999. He has been honored with the Officer of the Order of the Niger, Civil Division, for his contributions to Nigerian sports and society. Beyond football, Kanu has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and an African brand ambassador for the digital television company StarTimes.

Before Fame

Growing up in Owerri, southeastern Nigeria, Kanu honed his football skills in a country where the sport was deeply rooted in the culture, with local clubs playing a key role in getting noticed professionally. He joined Iwuanyanwu Nationale, one of Nigeria's top clubs, and his talent caught the eye of European scouts in the early 1990s, a time when African players were starting to make a lasting impression in Europe's top leagues.

Moving to Ajax in Amsterdam placed him in one of the world’s best youth development systems. In the mid-1990s, Ajax, led by coach Louis van Gaal, was bringing together an exceptional group of young players, and Kanu's arrival aligned with a highly successful period for the Dutch club. His quick adaptation to European football's demands at such a young age set the stage for a career that lasted nearly two decades at the highest levels.
