Biography

Nyaung-u Sawrahan (c. 924–1001), also known as Taungthugyi Min, was the king of the Pagan dynasty of Burma (Myanmar) from around 956 to 1001. Born in Nyaung-U, he became one of the most important rulers in early Burmese history, ruling for about 45 years over a city-state that would eventually grow into one of Southeast Asia's great empires. He died in Bagan, the capital city that he greatly influenced. He was married to Taung Pyinthe, Ale Pyinthe, and Myauk Pyinthe.

Before Fame

Nyaung-u Sawrahan was born around 924 in Nyaung-U, a town in the dry zone of Upper Burma near the Irrawaddy River. At that time, the region was marked by political division, with Pagan being one of several city-states competing for power. Not much is known about his early years, but when he took the throne around 956, he led a state that was starting to exert more influence over its neighbors. His rise to kingship took place amidst local rivalries and the gradual strengthening of power that would shape Pagan's early growth.
