Biography

Olav V was King of Norway from 1957 until he passed away in 1991. He played a crucial role in uniting the country during both war and peace. He was born Prince Alexander of Denmark at Appleton House on July 2, 1903, the only child of Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of Wales. His life took a dramatic turn in 1905 when his father became King Haakon VII of Norway, making him the heir to the Norwegian throne and prompting a name change to Olav.

Olav grew up in Norway, being the first heir to the throne to be raised there since the 14th century. His education included both civilian and military training, with studies at Balliol College and the Norwegian Military Academy. He married his first cousin, Princess Märtha of Sweden, in 1929, which helped strengthen ties between Scandinavian royal families.

During World War II, Olav played a key role in Norway's resistance against the Germans. When Germany invaded in 1940, he went into exile in London with his father. There, they became important symbols of Norwegian independence. In 1944, he was appointed Norwegian Chief of Defence, coordinating resistance efforts and boosting morale among Norwegian forces.

After his father died in 1957, Olav became king and quickly became known as a friendly, approachable monarch. His informal style and real connection with everyday people earned him the nickname 'Folkekongen' (The People's King). He often used public transportation and kept simple personal habits that made him well-liked by Norwegians. He reigned for 34 years until he died at The Royal Lodge, Holmenkollen on January 17, 1991.

Before Fame

Olav grew up during Norway's political changes in the early 20th century. After Norway gained independence from Sweden in 1905, they needed a king, so Prince Carl of Denmark was chosen. This meant the young prince, just two years old, moved to Norway where his parents focused on nurturing his Norwegian identity and cultural ties.

His education focused on both academics and military training to prepare him for leadership roles. With a British royal background from his mother and Danish roots from his father, combined with a Norwegian education, Olav was well-suited to represent Norway's intricate European connections while keeping a strong national identity.
